Mass Timber

  • Mass Timber is a generic term that encompasses various large size engineered wood products such as glue laminated beams, laminated veneer lumber, and Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT). In short, it involves attaching smaller pieces of soft wood together to form larger, stronger pieces.

  • Mass Timber is typically used as a substitution for steel and concrete, but more recently is being utilized in place of stick-framing as well. Unlike many other building materials, the components can be fabricated off-site to exact specifications, resulting in much faster build times and extremely tight tolerances. It can be assembled in weather not conducive for other building types. It is also a lot quieter than most other types of construction, making you a better neighbor.

  • In 2015, DR Johnson became the first US based manufacturer of Cross Laminated Timber and, since then, several others have followed. While others have been fabricating CLT in Austria & elsewhere since 1996, Mass Timber panel products are relatively new to the domestic market. Historically, Mass Timber projects are larger commercial structures & recently US Code changed to allow up to 18 stories of Mass Timber structure. More recently Timber Builds & others have pushed to utilize the same benefits in smaller structures.

We partner with local providers that specialize in Mass Timber products made from forest restoration activities in Washington and British Columbia. In utilizing their products, we would directly support forest fire prevention and sustainable use of forest land.

  • As opposed to stick frame construction, Mass Timber panels form a continuous 3”+ shell around the entirety of the building. This enclosure creates a solid structure with a 60+ year life expectancy that stands the test of time. Utilizing machine cut parts & pieces, it is easy to replicate the same structure to create high quality living spaces that are weather tight, keeping out the elements (and pests). Mass Timber Structures also have proven fire-testing showing a linear char rate of only 1”/hr.

Efficiency, Speed & Precision converge to create rock-solid structures completed in 40-50% less time, giving the owner more time to enjoy the completed project and all the benefits that come with it.
